Leak Detection on Central Heating Systems

Need help with a Central Heating leak?

We offer accurate leak detection on central heating systems. Central heating leaks usually show up around September, after months of non-use.  We switch our central heating system on in the Autumn only to find it’s not working, boiler faults, loss of pressure and leaking pipes. This is when we realise just how much we need and use our central heating.

In many cases, a heating engineer will confirm that it’s not the boiler at fault and will suggest you have a leak in the heating pipe system.

A further investigation now becomes more difficult, with pipes hidden under floors and behind walls. It’s at this point you should consider a central heating leak detection specialist.

After 4-5 months of non-use, it’s common for Central Heating systems to experience problems.

How do you find a water leak on your Central Heating System?

Many modern homes have expensively fitted floor coverings which make for difficult inspections under floors, the disruption and cost of going on a ‘search and find’ mission does not appeal.

At The Leak Detective we have invested heavily in some of the best leak detection equipment available to help us find your central heating leak with the minimum of fuss.

 Tracer Gas
 Acoustic Correlators
 Borescope Cameras
 Infrared Cameras

Frequently Asked Questions

This depends largely on the layout of your heating system, size / shape of your home or property, and the build of your home or property. A typical heating system is made up of 3 key parts: the boiler, the radiators and the pipework connecting them. In most cases, each room in the property contains radiators and pipework, with pipework often being underfloor and inside/on the walls.

You can narrow the location down to some degree by understanding where in the system radiators start to lose pressure, or don’t heat. Whether you can then access and fix that leak depends on the factors above.

In short, yes. Whether you can do that without the help of a central heating specialist depends on access, confidence and the risk you’re prepared to take. Certain floor types, such as concrete floors or tiled floors, make access to underfloor piping more difficult. Our Tracer Gas and Acoustic Correlator equipment is designed to allow detection of the leak location without access.

Not in all cases, no. If you are constantly having to top up the pressure then there is a chance you have either a leak on your central heating system OR a fault on the boiler. We would always recommend you get your boiler inspected first, in our experience around 40% of our calls to leaks on central heating systems are not in fact water leaks but faults on the boiler.

There is no fixed overall price. The costing of detecting the leak on the central heating system is often easier because of the state-of-the-art equipment we use. There’s little intrusion or requirement to pull up floors etc. Ultimately though we need to come out and see the scenario to quote effectively. The cost of repair is largely dependant on the damage caused by the leak and the access available. Some of the cost can be covered under insurance
